Meditating on iconic imagery, Bonnici is a trickster rather than a preacher, his works’ a series of playful asides to the camera.
In many of his works this act of play is extended to the viewer. Invited to participate in different ways, the form of such play can be real or imagined, the works’ mimicry opening doors to such possibilities. Through his incorporation of the iconic, Bonnici’s re-modeling of the familiar activates the potential to think differently about how we respond to the persuasiveness of what we see.
Emanuel has participated in a number of exhibitions at a local level as well as internationally. His work has been featured in Cross-Currents; Critical Essays on art and culture in Malta, and L’Art Contemporain en Europe (Beaux Arts Editions, 2008) amongst others. In 2009, Emanuel represented Malta at the XIV edition of the Biennal for young artists fromEurope and the Mediterranean which was held in Skopje.
